Why SureMart was built, and the families behind it
SureMart has a long history in my heart.
I do not have my own family. But through my work as a geneticist, I have helped thousands of families through their family-planning journey. This is where this story begins.
My work with genetics started over three decades ago, when our ability to read DNA was nowhere near where it is today. I began as a cytogeneticist, which means looking at chromosomes under a microscope, checking whether they are correct in number and structure. The science fascinated me. But the best part was always the human being behind the sample.
I loved prenatal genetics. Growing a small amount of amniotic fluid or chorionic villus, looking at the cells of an unborn baby,reading its chromosomes. Every sample, every report, had a story behind it. The story of parents waiting for the one thing they were hoping for. A healthy baby.
Every time I gave a result, I felt I had played some small part in the life of that child.
Back then, the tools had limits. A microscope can only show you so much. Small changes in the DNA, the kind that sit far below its resolution, stayed hidden. Some of those changes matter, and families had no way of knowing about them in advance. Not because anyone got anything wrong, but because the science had not caught up yet.
That is what stayed with me over the years. The wish that families could have this information earlier, calmly, before a pregnancy rather than during one. That quiet window before conception is where the most useful choices sit.
Fast forward thirty years, and the science has caught up. We can now read a person's DNA in a matter of days. We can find the small changes that once stayed hidden. And we can do it at the best possible time, when a couple is simply planning, thinking ahead, getting ready.
That is the whole point of SureMart.
Not to wait, but to give every prospective family more information from the start. For most parents,the news is reassuring, and they carry on with real peace of mind. For the small number who learn something more, knowing early means more options, more time, and more room to plan the family they want.
Knowing is not everyone's path, and I have always respected that. Some parents would rather not look, and that is a choice made withdignity too. But for those who do want to know, I wanted there to be a betteranswer, available to everyone, right at the beginning.
That is the answer we built. It is the one I wish every family could have.
